Blockbuster trades that reshaped the Eastern Conference. A defending champion trying to run it back with the league gunning for them. And a 40-year-old LeBron James is somehow still at the center of it all.
The New York Knicks ended a 53-year championship drought by knocking off the San Antonio Spurs in the 2026 NBA Finals. They lost only three games the entire postseason. But the path to a repeat is anything but clear. Giannis Antetokounmpo is in Miami. LeBron James and Jaylen Brown are in Philadelphia. The Thunder and Spurs are loaded in the West. And the Celtics are trying to figure out life without Brown.
Training camps start in late September. Opening night is October 20. Here is everything you need to know about the NBA 2026-27 season.
The Knicks’ Title Defense
New York is the defending champion for the first time since 1973. The weight of that is real. The Knicks have the franchise’s first opportunity to defend a title, and expectations are sky-high.
ESPN’s Summer Forecast has the Knicks winning the Eastern Conference with 53 wins. But there is a catch. ESPN experts do not have them winning the title. The panel expects the Oklahoma City Thunder to take the championship.
The Knicks made subtle moves this offseason. They signed veteran center Andre Drummond as Mitchell Robinson’s replacement and retained Shamet, Jose Alvarado, and Jordan Clarkson on new deals. President Leon Rose also inked Mohamed Diawara to a four-year deal. Nothing flashy. Just continuity.
The question is whether continuity is enough. The East is stacked. The 76ers added LeBron and Brown. The Heat added Giannis. The Pistons won 60 games last season and are returning most of that core. The Knicks will have to be better than they were last year just to stay in the same place.
Philadelphia’s Superteam
This is the biggest story of the offseason. The 76ers signed LeBron James in free agency and traded for Jaylen Brown, sending Paul George and draft picks to the Boston Celtics.
Philadelphia now has a starting lineup that features LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and Joel Embiid. That is not just a contender. That is a superteam on paper. ESPN projects the 76ers to finish fourth in the East with 50 wins. But the ceiling is much higher than that.
The question is chemistry. LeBron is 40 years old. Brown is coming from a Celtics team that was built around him and Jayson Tatum for a decade. Embiid is still one of the most dominant big men in the league when healthy. If they click, they could be the best team in the East. Jason Kidd called them one of the offseason’s two biggest moves and said they “could be the best team in the East”.
Giannis Heads to Miami
Giannis Antetokounmpo is headed to South Beach. The Miami Heat traded Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, and Jaime Jaquez Jr. to land the two-time MVP. They also added Klay Thompson on a buyout from Dallas and signed Nick Richards to a one-year deal.

ESPN projects Miami to finish seventh in the East with 47 wins. But that feels low. A frontcourt of Giannis and Adebayo, with Thompson spacing the floor, is dangerous.
Giannis cannot sign a maximum extension with Miami until January 6 because he was traded. So there is pressure on both sides to make this work. The Heat are all-in. If Giannis buys in, Miami could be the team that comes out of the East.
The Celtics’ New Look
Boston made a bold move. They traded Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George and draft picks. It was a shocking decision. Brown had been a fixture alongside Jayson Tatum for a decade. Now Tatum is the lone star in Boston.
The Celtics are an intriguing team to watch this season. Paul George will need to take on a massive role to replace Brown’s production. Derrick White will need to bounce back from a tough shooting year. If both happen, Boston could still be a top seed.
Sporting News expert Stephen Noh predicts the Celtics could still finish with the No. 1 seed in the East. Boston has been a regular-season juggernaut under coach Joe Mazzulla, winning 56 games last season even without Tatum for significant stretches. The real question is the playoffs. Trading Brown lowers their ceiling in the postseason. They are still good. But they are not the same team.
Western Conference Juggernauts
The West is a two-horse race. The San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder are the clear favorites.
ESPN projects the Spurs to finish with a league-best 62 wins. Victor Wembanyama is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. The Spurs also have De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, and Stephon Castle. They are young, deep, and terrifying.
The Thunder are right behind them at 60 wins. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is an MVP candidate. Chet Holmgren, Ajay Mitchell, and Jalen Williams provide elite depth. The Thunder reached the Western Conference Finals last season and lost to the Spurs. They want revenge.
Opening night features a Western Conference Finals rematch between the Thunder and Spurs. That game will set the tone for the entire West race.
The Rockets’ Rise
The Houston Rockets are expected to take another step forward in Year 2 with Kevin Durant. They finished 52-30 last season despite major injuries. Fred VanVleet is back from injury. Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard are continuing to develop.
The Rockets added veteran guards Marcus Smart and Bogdan Bogdanović this offseason to strengthen their depth. ESPN projects them to finish 51-31, tied for third in the West with the Nuggets. Durant is still elite. The supporting cast is improving. Houston is a legitimate contender.
The Nuggets’ Continued Contention
Denver signed six-time All-Star DeMar DeRozan to a one-year deal. DeRozan gives the Nuggets a veteran presence alongside Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray.
The Nuggets also resolved Peyton Watson’s restricted free agency by trading him to Cleveland. Their core of Jokic, Murray, and Aaron Gordon remains intact. ESPN projects them to finish 51-31, tied with Houston for third in the West. If they stay healthier than last season, they could exceed that projection.
The Pacers as Eastern Conference Dark Horse
The Indiana Pacers are the dark horse of the Eastern Conference. ESPN ranked them as the team most likely to take a major leap this season. Tyrese Haliburton is back after missing all of last season with a ruptured Achilles tendon.
The Pacers added Kelly Oubre Jr., Ivica Zubac, and Larry Nance Jr. to complement Haliburton. Their identity is built on fast breaks, multiple shot creators, and two-way threats. ESPN has the Pacers tied for the 9th seed in the East at 44 wins. But this feels like a team that could surprise people if Haliburton is fully healthy.
Other Notable Storylines
Kawhi Leonard’s uncertain future is one of the biggest question marks. The Clippers traded Leonard to the Toronto Raptors for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and draft picks. But the deal is on hold pending an NBA investigation into alleged salary cap circumvention.
The Lakers sold again. Los Angeles was sold for the second time in 10 months. Luka Doncic now unquestionably leads the team.
The Timberwolves made moves. They brought in LaMelo Ball as a new backcourt partner for Anthony Edwards and signed Jonathan Kuminga to a two-year deal.
The Utah Jazz are a dark horse in the West. Sporting News projects them as a team likely to make a major leap.

Victor Wembanyama is already the Defensive Player of the Year. He is only getting better. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is an MVP-caliber player. Jalen Brunson is the reigning Finals MVP. LeBron James is 40 years old and still playing at an elite level. Giannis Antetokounmpo is in a new city with something to prove. Tyrese Haliburton is coming back from injury. Kevin Durant is still one of the best scorers in NBA history.
